Australia & New Zealand ![]() B'nai B'rith members in Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, and Wellington have supported a wide range of community service activities and charitable causes. During the past five years, members have raised considerable sums for many Australian charitable organizations. Among the BBANZ projects and programs are: Courage to Care is a major outreach program of workshops and a traveling exhibition designed to show people of all ages, races, and persuasions that individuals can make a difference by responding to prejudice and intolerance. The program celebrates those courageous individuals who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust and draws parallels with examples of discrimination, racism, and stereotyping in our society today. B'nai B'rith Retirement Villages in Sydney and Melbourne offer affordable self-care accommodations in a congenial and caring environment for Jewish seniors. The Anti-Defamation Commission is the human rights arm of B'nai B'rith Australia/New Zealand. Dedicated to combatting racism, intolerance, and prejudice, it seeks to secure justice and fair treatment for all citizens through monitoring and responding to bigotry, racism, and prejudice; employing research, fact finding, education, and law to counter racism and prejudice; and building bridges of understanding and friendship among racial, religious, and ethnic groups. The Israel Commission supports projects for the poor and disadvantaged in Israel, including: Jaffa Institute's after-school care and educational support for children; the Israel Guide Dogs Center; Be'er Sova soup kitchen and food distribution in Beersheba; the Children's Village in Carmel, which provides a home environment for children with family problems; and Wingate Institute's social rehabilitation program. Migrant Services New Zealand provides support for Jewish immigrants from places as diverse as South Africa, Israel, and Argentina. Support includes aid with the immigration process, housing and job assistance — and most importantly — providing a network of friends to help arrivals integrate into a new community. |
